Welcoming immigrants through legal services
There’s a huge push by some people in our country to keep immigrants out. If we are honest, that’s a bit hypocritical. Virtually every American’s ancestors came from abroad. Why was it okay for them, but not okay now?
America has room. Immigrants are a smaller percentage of the population today than they were in 1910! We need people who will work, pay taxes, volunteer, and leverage their skills for the good of the community in which they live. People come to this country because they believe it is a place of justice. They’re not looking for a handout. They’re just looking for a place to live in peace and contribute to society.
Justice for Our Neighbors respects each person’s determined fight to achieve a better life. Through our extensive volunteer corps, we create a welcoming community that honors immigrants as fellow human beings. Those volunteers welcome them, and help connect them to the local community. Through our attorneys, we help immigrants understand their choices and navigate the complexities of the legal system. We provide the critical legal assistance that aspiring residents need but usually cannot afford or access. In this way, they can make the best possible decisions for their own welfare and that of their family.
It’s automatic to mouth the Pledge of Allegiance without thinking about the commitment it entails from us. If we take that pledge seriously, then we must pursue real and necessary steps to provide “liberty and justice for all,” including those who desire to become legal residents. That’s what Justice for Our Neighbors is all about.
